Although the city of Umag is well known often his surroundings surprise us with unexpected details of the history, architecture and beauty of the landscape but also with a surprisingly wide range of content.
To the south of Umag is Sveti Ivan, a small and picturesque village with the church of the same name whose patron is celebrated during the summer. The original name of this small Italian village known even today is S. Giovanni della Corneta - the Italian word "Corniolo" that means cornel indicates a place where grows many cornel trees. This small and interesting detail differs St Ivan (Umag) from other places of the same name in Istria.
In the ancient period and the Middle Ages St. Ivan was a fortress because of the great importance of its port. Under the sea bay of St. Ivan you can see the remains of an old mole. The raising sea surface invaded the ancient port while the gradually moved and was used up to the end of the 19th century, especially for smaller boats, and in most of the loading and the unloading of stone and wood.
